Fatty Liver Disease

Metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly known as NAFLD, is increasingly common in South Asia and its diaspora. South Asians are especially vulnerable due to higher liver and visceral fat at lower body weight and metabolic risk factors such as diabetes, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and dyslipidemia. Culturally adapted interventions—like a South Asian–style Mediterranean diet—can help reduce liver fat and improve metabolic health. These findings emphasize early screening, targeted prevention, and culturally sensitive strategies to address MASLD.
